Deets graduated from Texas A&M in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics, and became a Texas Real Estate Broker in 1980. 

Throughout his  career in both Oil and Gas, as a Landman and investor, and in Ranch Real Estate, he has relied upon his ranching background for an understanding of the land. Being from a ranching family in Uvalde, Texas, he has spent his life learning about soil, animals, water, and plants, and how they interact. 

​He and his wife, Tina, have lived in Boerne since 1995. His pastimes include hunting, fishing and shooting sports.
